The call from Penny Hardaway to Jordan Walsh came on Aug. 23.
The fourth-year Memphis basketball motorcoach wanted to extend a scholarship offer to Walsh, a five-star wing prospect in the 2022 grade. But Hardaway wasn't done in that location. Afterward the initial phone call, he made some other call — to Walsh'southward father, John.
"He let me know that he would be recruiting (Walsh) hard — those were his words," John Walsh said. "No sooner than I hung upward with him, the phone rang, and information technology was (assistant) coach (Larry) Brown. It was amazing. To be honest, nosotros didn't know a whole lot about Memphis. (But) at present that coach Penny has reached out to him, we definitely want to encounter all the university has to offer."
Fast-forward one calendar month and Walsh is due to arrive in Memphis on Friday for an official visit — a testament to the Tigers' full-court press. Hardaway has signed four five-star recruits and 2 No. ane recruiting classes since he was hired at Memphis in 2018.

"Whenever you lot have a head autobus similar Penny Hardaway and so you've got Larry Brown riding shotgun and Rasheed (Wallace), I hateful, how could you not seriously consider a team led by guys like that?" John Walsh said.
The 6-human foot-7 Walsh is the No. 27 recruit in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He spent his first three seasons of high school basketball game at Oak Cliff Faith Family unit University in Dallas. As a freshman in 2019, he helped the school win its first state championship, dunking the winning handbasket just before the terminal cablegram. Last season, Walsh averaged eighteen points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2.four steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
Walsh transferred to Southern California University following his inferior flavor, then decided against it. He concluded upwards at Link University in Branson, Missouri, to be office of its inaugural roster. Link Academy double-decker Rodney Perry, who spent 17 years in the college ranks, called Walsh "a big-time thespian."
"Big-time athlete. Measurables off the charts," he said. "41-inch vertical, 7-3 fly bridge. Large-fourth dimension upside."
Walsh has visited TCU, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona Land and Texas. He's too scheduled to visit Kansas in October.
John Walsh said evolution and getting meaningful playing time as a freshman are at the top of his son's priorities.
"Jordan has aspirations of i day reaching the NBA, so he wants to get somewhere where he's going to go elite development," said Walsh. "Besides, he wants to play impactful minutes as a freshman. Not saying he'due south demanding anyone starts him, but he wants to play impactful minutes in a system where he tin can help the squad win and showcase his talents at the same time."
Walsh describes his Jordan — whose twin brother, Joshua, "is equally focused on academics as Jordan is on athletics" — every bit a player who can impact a game in multiple ways.
"His length and quickness give him the ability to guard one through 4 and, in some cases, some fives," he said. "He limits turnovers on the offensive terminate. Great court vision. 1000 Blanc (Mich.) 4-star senior guard Ty Rodgers is scheduled to take an official visit to Memphis on Oct. xv, and tiptop-30 four-star guard Zion Cruz is also planning to visit. Christian Brothers four-star senior guard Chandler Jackson took an unofficial visit to Memphis on Aug. 3.
Junior guard Robert Dillingham, a five-star prospect ranked No. nine in the 2023 form, took an official visit with the Tigers terminal week.
